Emergency! Do You Know What to Do?

The increasing number and ferocity of unexpected weather events and natural disasters means we owe it to ourselves and our families to be ready should an emergency occur.

Here are some tips on how to get disaster-ready.

  • Know where to go for help. The first few pages of your telephone directory contain information about organisations to contact in the event of an emergency.
  • Decide with your family who will do what if disaster strikes. Who will pack bags, who will round up the pets, who will collect important documents and computer back-ups, etc?
  • Plan your communications. If a family member is not at home, how will you contact them and what should they do? Try to get home, stay where they are, or go to a pre-agreed place out of danger?
  • Put together an emergency pack. Include water, a torch and spare batteries, tinned or preserved food, blankets and other items you think will be important.
  • Without causing panic and alarm, talk with family members about possible disaster scenarios and work out an appropriate response to each.

When disaster strikes you may have to rely on those immediately around you for some time before official help arrives. By putting together a disaster plan for your household, you will already be in a better position to deal with any emergency that arises.
